We had a break in the endless endless summer rain and some
sunshine finally made an appearance, so we jumped in the car ASAP and legged it
up to Cadwell Farm in north Hertfordshire, home to Hitchin Lavender Farm. They
have been farming lavender for over one hundred years and for five generations.
They currently have over 12 acres of lavender which amounts to 17 miles of
rows! And from this they produce 250 litres of lavender oil a year! In the
Sixteenth Century Hitchin was one of two lavender growing areas in the country
with over 100 acres of fields around the town! It was just BEAUTIFUL there, so
calm peaceful and perfumed! For the bargain price of £4 entry you get a large
bag and a pair of scissors to cut your own lavender to take home and dry as
well! We spent a while just walking up and down the rows amongst buzzing bees
with lavender flowers brushing our legs, it was idyllic. At the top of the hill
you could look down up the whole field while swallows swooped and dived above,
and there were even some benches to sit on and soak up the sun and the aroma!
Gorgeous!
